Medical offices will see a one percent decrease in Medicare reimbursements for every year they don’t qualify for meaningful use requirements. The penalty will change by one percentage point each year to a total five percent. The challenge has been that some EHR vendors have struggled to obtain the proper certification to meet Meaningful Use 2 certification, which is required for MU2.

Training cost also contributes to the rising overhead costs. Most offices are not trained on EMR portal systems, and it takes time, energy, and resources to train staff adequately.
